I started reefkeeping about 10 years ago. I honestly couldn’t tell you the exact year anymore, but like a lot of people in this hobby, I started with freshwater.
Even though I really enjoyed keeping freshwater fish, I always found myself wandering over to the much more vibrant and lively saltwater section of my LFS. Eventually, curiosity got the best of me and I made my first venture over to the dark side—a 20-gallon Innovative Marine AIO with a pair of clownfish.
My first coral was a Rasta Zoa that I paid $50 per polyp for. Fast-forward about 10 years, and here I am as a co-owner of one of the top reef shops in the country.
My passion for this hobby has definitely been tested over the years. Like every reefer, I’ve had my share of successes, failures, crashes, mistakes, and lessons learned. But with every trial and tribulation, I picked up a little more knowledge along the way. Being able to work with other passionate, like-minded reefkeepers on a daily basis has also kept my love for the hobby stronger than ever.
If I had to describe my reefing style, I’d call myself a common-sense reefer. I like to keep things simple. I believe the best methods are the ones that can be understood, repeated, and replicated by just about any reefer—not something that only works under one very specific set of circumstances.
